How to Set Up Bleed in Adobe Illustrator

1. On a New Document

  1. Go to File > New.
  2. Set Units to millimetres (or inches) and enter the trim size, not the size with bleed. Illustrator handles the bleed separately.
  3. In the Bleed fields, type 3 mm and make sure the chain link icon is active so all four sides match.
  4. Under Advanced Options, set Color Mode: CMYK and Raster Effects: High (300 ppi).
  5. Click Create. The red line outside the artboard is your bleed line, the black artboard edge is your trim.

2. On an Existing Document

  1. File > Document Setup > Bleed, enter 3 mm on all sides, click OK.

The 10 Mistakes That Get Print Files Rejected

These are the issues we see week after week when clients send artwork straight to a printer.

  1. No bleed at all. The file is exactly 85 x 55 mm with a coloured background. Guaranteed white edges.
  2. Bleed set in the document but artwork not extended. Setting the bleed value does nothing on its own. You have to physically drag the background into the bleed zone.
  3. A white border added on purpose. If you design a thin white frame around the edge, any cutting shift makes it uneven. Either extend the frame well into the safety area or drop it.
  4. Text too close to the trim. Phone numbers, URLs and page folios sitting 1 mm from the edge get clipped or look off-centre.
